On 23 October 2013, the German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine awarded the Prize for Biochemical Analysis to Prof. Dr. F.-U. Hartl in Dresden.
Prof. Dr. F.-U. Hartl, Head of Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry, Martinsried, received the prize for his work on the topic of ‘the significance of the protein folding with the aid of chaperones in connection with neurodegenerative diseases’.
His research results made a significant contribution to the development of new active substances for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
Prof. Dr. F.-U. Hartl was able to show that molecular chaperones can prevent the formation of fibrils and protein aggregates which are connected with neurodegenerative diseases. The chaperones therefore provide great hope for the future development of new medicines to better treat diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, and one day perhaps even cure them.
